Rotary Club of San Pedro Community Reading Day

By Rotary Club of San PedroSan Pedro, California

Our Community Reading Day event will be held on Saturday April 17, 2016 at the local branch of the Los Angeles Public Library in San Pedro from 2PM to 4PM.

We invite you to volunteer for this event to help us make it a great success! Come meet your neighbors who are Rotarians and give back to your community in a meaningful way!

Our program is designed to identify and include the most challenged local children and give them tools and inspiration to develop literacy skills to achieve success in school and in life.

This fun and entertaining program will include a zumba dance, (led by local middle and high schoolers), a library tour and instant library cards for those who do not have them.

Children's book authors Annabeth Bondor-Stone and Connor White will provide an interactive presentation of their book "SHIVERS - The Pirate Who is Afraid of EVERYTHING!". At the end of the program there are snacks and every child will receive a backpack of several good books to own, including "Shivers!" which the authors will sign for each child.

See Annabeth and Connor in action in the video link above!

While the kids are busy, their parents or caregivers will be coached by a skilled bilingual educator in habits and tools that support building good reading skills at home.

For this event we have already received a corporate grant from Barnes & Noble Booksellers, a community service grant from Rotary International, and are actively searching for additional sponsorship. We have committed local partners including LA Public Library, Boys and Girls Club, YMCA, YWCA, Toberman Neighborhood and Harbor Interfaith Services who all provide services every day to local children and families.

From you we're hoping to raise half of the money we need for this event.

And we need volunteers to help make the day a great success!

Come join us on the 17th and see what the Rotary Club does in your community. Contact our volunteer coordinator to sign up.
