For the past 16 years, Sparks Rotary has partnered with the City of Sparks and the Nevada Department of Wildlife to create the annual event of Kid's Free Fishing Day.
This one-day event takes place at Sparks Marina on the second Saturday of June with the purpose to create a fun environment where children of all ages can learn to fish. Along with the fishing, there are hot dogs, ice cream, drinks, games and activities to entertain the children. The goal is to give children of all ages a positive outdoor experience and hopefully encourage future outdoor activities. All of this at no cost to the participating children.
A usual event brings 1200- 1500 children form the community to participate. Free fishing poles are available and given to each child for them to use and keep. Sparks Rotary averages giving out 1000- 1200 poles per year and we thank our many sponsors for the money and supplies that they donate for this event.
This event runs on an annual budget of $18,000. Between Sparks Rotary and its sponsors, we are able to raise $14,000. We are looking to raise the additional $4,000 through Giving Trail donations. This $4000 will allow us to buy approximately 400 fishing poles. In addition, we are also looking for volunteers to help with this event.
Rotary is made up of community leaders doing local and international service and promoting ethics. If you are interested in having fun and want to join a great group of people working to build a better community, consider joining us at one of our weekly meetings. Sparks Rotary meets every Wednesday from 12:00 to 1:30 pm at the Sparks Nugget, 1100 Nugget Avenue, Sparks, Nevada 89431. Call Stacie Perkins, 775-997-5923.
