Assisting Students Faced with a Weekend Food Crisis

By Rotary Club of FernleyFernley, Nevada

Starting in December 2010, the Backpack Program supplies over 150 meals weekly to youth and teens during the school year. With space from Fernley Intermediate and student volunteers, the bags are packed and then distributed to local school counselors for student handout.

$150 sponsors a child for an entire school year from going hungry on the weekends.

The Rotary Club of Fernley spends approximately $18,000 annually to fund this program.

Each bag that students take home include the following: 2 entree meals, 2 juice boxes (100% juice), 2 packets of instant oatmeal, 2 servings of fruit, a cracker snack & whole-grain snack bar.
